What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural science, is known to have its roots in the Sthapatya Veda, part or its will be right to say “upveda” of Atharva Veda. This knowledge focuses on the interaction between people and their built environments, aiming to create harmonious living spaces by aligning them with natural elements and cosmic energies. This is accomplished by integrating the five fundamental elements of nature—Earth, Water, Light, Wind, and Space—and harmonizing them with human and material components.
In a verse from the Rigveda (Rigveda 6/54/1), the Vedic sage prays to Vastoshpati “’a lord of the house or in simple language as we know Vastu Purush (वास्तुपुरुष)” for protection and prosperity blessings. The Rishi requests divine blessings for both humans (Dwipadas) and animals (Chatuspadas).
सम्। पू॒ष॒न्। वि॒दुषा॑। न॒य॒। यः। अञ्ज॑सा। अ॒नु॒ऽशास॑ति। यः। ए॒व। इ॒दम् इति॑। ब्रव॑त् ॥१॥
Meaning: -हे विद्वन् ! हम लोगों को जो सत्यविद्या का उपदेश करें, उनका सत्कार कर उनके सङ्ग से हम लोग विद्वान् होकर उपदेशकर्त्ता हों ॥१॥
The Samhita part of the Jyotishshastra extensively discusses Vastuvidya. Vastushatra is included in the Samhita skandh due to the essential aspects of Jyotish: “Dig (Direction), Desh (Place), and Kaal (Time).” Jyotisha has been analyzing various aspects of a person’s life since the Vedic period, with contributions from Acharyas over many years. According to Matsya Purana, Rishis such as Bhrigu, Atri, and Vasishtha set high standards by explaining Vastushastra. Vishwakarma and Maya were among the notable figures. Their followers have detailed the rules of building construction within Vastushastra texts, which provide insights into the aims and necessities of Vastushastra, beyond its specific discussions.
